Three reasons to fall back in love with makeup during lockdown

Updated: Jan 6, 2021

You could say that when it comes to loving makeup I’m biased but even as a pro, I have the odd ‘I-can’t-be-bothered-today’ no-makeup days. (Yes, really!). And trust me, there’s been plenty of those during lockdown.

I’ve been reading about the lockdown inspiring people to have a clear out, learn how to bake the perfect soda bread, redecorate their house (something I’m currently well-versed in – hello refurbishment project!) The lockdown has given a lot of us the inspiration to tackle projects, learn something new and generally keep busy.

The thing is, the lockdown is also a perfect opportunity to hit the reset button on ourselves.

Yup, ourselves.

I firmly believe makeup isn’t just about the products – it is a state of mind. It’s about giving you confidence and making you feel good on the outside which helps you feel good on the inside. So, if you aren’t swooning already, here’s my top five reasons to fall back in love makeup during lockdown.

Marie Kondo everything you've got

I have a good friend who is obsessed with makeup and no joke, she’s probably got more makeup than I do! But the truth is, she doesn’t know what to do with most of it or how to apply it. But we’ve all been there, sucked into the shiny offers in front of us that eventually end up in the bottom drawer. Time to check out what you’ve got! Treat it the same as if you’re having a wardrobe clear out. Dig out all the makeup you’ve got. Check to see if it’s in date or if you’ve used it in the last 1-2 years. Bin what you don’t want, keep what you love. You know the drill. Simplify and organise.

Have fun learning about what's in your makeup bag

So, like my friend, you’ll probably find that you’ve got some really nice bits that you’ve bought but don’t reallyknow how to use them. Google your products and seek out reviews and/or videos that show you how to really get the best out of what you’ve got. Fall back in love with your products by learning more about how to make the most of them. You’ll feel like you’ve got a whole new makeup bag!

Lockdown is the time to practice

If you’ve always wanted to perfect your winged eyeliner, or learn how to do your brows, now’s the time. You’ve probably said it so many times – ‘I wish I could do my eye makeup.’ or ‘I wish I knew how to make my lips look fuller.’ Well, you can! It takes practice but think how chuffed you’ll feel with yourself when you manage to create a look you love for yourself, by yourself. Think of it this way – we’re still mostly staying at home so even if you don’t get it right, no-one is around to see you, you can take it off and no-one need know! Plus, you’ll discover how to maximise what you’ve learned about in your makeup bag.
